A PRACTICAL CHANNEL GUIDE
Google Ads or SEO?
Choose around your business.
Both can help people discover a service. They earn attention in different ways, involve different work and should be judged against the enquiries your business needs.

The trade-offs at a glance.
| Decision | Google Ads | SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Paid placements, subject to eligibility, auction conditions and campaign settings. | Organic search visibility earned through accessible, relevant and useful pages. Inclusion and positions are not guaranteed. |
| Timing | An eligible campaign can start reaching people after setup and approval. Learning what works still takes testing. | Changes need to be crawled and evaluated. Effects vary; a fixed ranking date is not a sound promise. |
| Costs | Media spend plus agreed management, setup and any creative or page work. | Time and production for technical work, service content and continued improvement. Organic clicks do not carry an ad click charge. |
| Control | Campaign budgets, bids, targeting and ads offer control within platform rules and available demand. | You control your site and content. You cannot choose or buy a particular organic ranking. |
| When spending pauses | Paid delivery stops when campaigns stop serving. Account learning and page improvements can still be useful. | Useful pages may continue attracting visits, but rankings and demand can change and maintenance remains necessary. |
When Google Ads can be a sensible first test.
You have a specific service, a genuine operating area and capacity to respond. There is search demand you want to test, a budget you can review and a page that explains the offer. Start with a focused question: can the campaign bring relevant enquiries at a cost the business can assess?
Clicks do not answer that question by themselves. Conversion tracking, search-term reviews and feedback on enquiry quality matter. A weak offer or slow follow-up can limit the value of otherwise relevant traffic. Explore our Google Ads management scope ↗
When SEO deserves more attention.
Your site does not clearly explain the services, important pages are difficult to crawl, or potential customers cannot find useful answers. Technical foundations and stronger service content can improve the site even before you can attribute a change in enquiries to organic search.
SEO needs realistic expectations and continued review. It is not a way to avoid all marketing costs. Prioritise the pages and questions closest to your customers’ decisions rather than publish articles simply to hit a weekly quota. Explore our SEO services ↗
When the two can work together.
A business may use paid search to test a defined offer while building useful service content. Both can point visitors to a clearer enquiry journey. Keep the reporting separate enough to understand which channel brought a visit, then review the business outcome.
Buying Google Ads does not buy a better organic ranking. Shared insights can inform your message and page priorities, but paid and organic performance should not be presented as the same result.
Make the decision with four inputs.
Bring your service priorities, available budget, current website and capacity to handle enquiries. Agree what a useful lead looks like and how it will be tracked. If the page or offer needs work first, address that before assuming the answer is more traffic.
